As you may have imagined, the name of this species comes from the town of Arbus, located in the south-western part of Sardinia. Officially it is not yet a recognized species, but the municipal administration of Arbus, along with the many local farmers, is working in this direction. From a recent census there are about 5,000 animals in the area and besides providing a dark wool, as is evident from the appearance, it produces a very different milk in terms of organoleptic characteristics and quantity.
From its milk is produced a high quality cheese that is only recently discovered by consumers.
In appearance it is very reminiscent of the Sardinian sheep, but with some differences in the head which is more bare with a curious curly tuft and a trunk of medium development, long and bare limbs and very black nails.
